The gruesome mass murder committed by 23-year-old Afan in Kerala has left the police without any clear leads regarding his motive. The case remains a mystery, as investigators have yet to determine whether his actions were driven by the drugs he frequently consumed. A special squad formed to probe the case is also investigating the alleged role of an influencer in inciting him to commit the crime. Based on the sequence of events and the calculated manner in which the murders were carried out, authorities suspect that he may have been influenced by someone.
The Crime Scene
A shattered skull, a woman’s lifeless body slumped in a chair, and a 13-year-old boy lying motionless, surrounded by ₹500 notes—these were the haunting scenes that greeted investigators at three separate locations in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. Afan’s girl friend Farsana, whose body was seen on the chair, is a post graduate student at a college in Kollam. The accused, a 23-year-old man, is believed to have carried out the brutal killings, leaving the police scrambling for answers. Authorities have hinted at “evidence of drug use” by the suspect. The shocking crime spree unfolded across three homes, spread over a distance of 20-25 kilometers, in the Venjaramoodu area near the state capital.
According to the police, 23-year-old Afan shocked everyone when he walked into the station and calmly confessed to murdering five of his own family members—his brother, grandmother, paternal uncle, aunt, and a young woman believed to be his lover. Investigators say all the victims were brutally bludgeoned to death, with his uncle suffering the most gruesome attack. The crime scenes were so horrific that even identifying the bodies became a challenge. “It was impossible to recognize them; they were drenched in blood. When we lifted Latheef [the uncle], someone’s fingers….,” a neighbor, recalling the terrifying sight, told PTI.
Drug And Debt Angle Also Been Investigated
The accused, 23-year-old Afan, walked into a police station on Monday, confessed to the murders, and claimed he had consumed rat poison. Authorities are now looking into financial struggles as a possible motive behind the gruesome killings. Afan’s father, who has been stuck in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, for the past seven years due to an expired visa and mounting debts, has been unable to return home.
In a desperate attempt to resolve their financial crisis, the family had visited him a few months ago on a short-term visa. Reports suggest they were planning to sell their property to pay off their debts—raising speculation that money troubles may have played a role in the tragic events.
