According to multiple reports, the accused, Afan, who has been arrested for the murder of five people, had allegedly planned to kill two more after his killing spree on February 24 in Venjaramoodu, Thiruvananthapuram. In the incident that took place in Kerala’s capital, after killing his family members, he allegedly planned to head to Thatathumalayil to murder a mother and daughter who were also his relatives. According to Manorama Online, Afan revealed this to a psychiatrist who visited him at the hospital.
What Was His Plan
The news report also states that Afan was enraged at them for refusing to lend him ₹5 lakh. After killing his paternal grandmother, Salma Biwi (88); his younger brother, Afsan (13); his girlfriend, Farzana (19); his uncle, Latif; and Latif’s wife, Shahida, he intended to head to Thatathumalayil. However, he felt exhausted after murdering his brother, Afsan, and abandoned his plan.
Afan Pawned Girl Friend Farsana’s Gold
During further investigations, it was found that Afan had pawned his girlfriend Farsana’s gold chain, on which Farsana started asking to retrieve and return the chain. Afsan after pawning the chain, he had given her a imitation chain to wear.
Current Investigation
On Thursday, the police will record the statement of Shemi, Afan’s mother, who is currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during his attack. However, a medical board that convened on Wednesday ruled out any mental health issues in Afan. According to their assessment, his blood test results showed no abnormalities, and his liver function was normal. He had been receiving treatment after claiming to have consumed rat poison following the brutal murders.
Drug And Debt Angle Also Been Investigated
The accused, 23-year-old Afan, walked into a police station on Monday, confessed to the murders, and claimed he had consumed rat poison. Authorities are now looking into financial struggles as a possible motive behind the gruesome killings. Afan’s father, who has been stuck in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, for the past seven years due to an expired visa and mounting debts, has been unable to return home.
In a desperate attempt to resolve their financial crisis, the family had visited him a few months ago on a short-term visa. Reports suggest they were planning to sell their property to pay off their debts—raising speculation that money troubles may have played a role in the tragic events.
