Kerala local body polls: The local body elections in Kerala were held in two phases on December 9 and December 11. Voting took place in 1,199 out of the total 1,200 local bodies in the state. Mattannur municipality in Kannur district did not vote this time because its elections are scheduled for September 2027. In the second phase, voter turnout across seven districts was 76.08 per cent. In the first phase, held on December 9, turnout stood at 70.91 per cent. These elections are meant to choose representatives for municipal corporations, municipalities, gram panchayats, block panchayats and district panchayats.
Phase 1– Elections held in seven districts- Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam for more than 11,000 wards across panchayats, municipalities, and three corporations.
Phase 2- Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts went to polls with voters casting ballots at the 18,274 polling stations.
The full results are expected to be declared by Saturday afternoon, according to the State Election Commission (SEC). The updates can be accessed on the ‘Trend’ website maintained by the SEC:
The outcome of the Kerala local body polls will shape political momentum ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Local body results have often signalled voter mood; verdicts in 2010 and 2015 went against the ruling front, and the Opposition later won the 2011 and 2016 Assembly elections.

The NDA is set to wrest Thiruvananthapuram Corporation from the LDF, while the UDF has secured Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kannur. Kozhikode has gone to the LDF.
Commenting on the Kerala local body election results, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the outcome was historic and carried significant implications for national politics. He added that voters have become discerning enough not to be misled by political tactics where parties collaborate in Delhi while pretending to be rivals in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrashekhar says, “It is a historical victory, for every BJP worker across the state because we have made significant strides in out vote share and political footprint… BJP and NDA have made gains in the hardcore areas of LDF and UDF… This has established that the LDF is out of the picture… The option in the coming Assembly elections is between UDF and NDA… We always attacked LDF for their corruption and mal-governance, while Congress is in alliance with the CPI(M) in 27 states and 8 Union Territories, so it should not mislead the people… We do not want any endorsement from corrupt twins like the Congress and the Left… I am very proud to be a part of this party (BJP)…”

BJP wins third straight term in Palakkad municipality
BJP secures third consecutive term in Palakkad municipality, winning 25 out of 53 seats despite internal challenges.
The BJP won 25 seats even though it faced its biggest internal conflict. In the outgoing council, the party had 28 seats, and in 2015, when it first came to power, it had won 24 seats. Although the BJP missed an absolute majority by two seats, it will continue to govern the municipality. This is because the UDF won only 17 seats and the LDF secured eight.

UDF achieves historic victory in Kerala's Malappuram local body polls, winning majorities across municipalities and panchayats.
Congress leader K. C. Venugopal said the UDF’s strong performance in the local body elections was due to the government’s dismissive approach to the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple gold theft case, unity within the Opposition, and anti-incumbency against the ruling front.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, he said the LDF had weakened across the state and that the government was unable to move forward.
He also said voters rejected Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s attempt on election day to portray the Congress as a discredited party.

Although the UDF has won the Thrissur Corporation, the LDF continues to hold the upper hand in the three-tier panchayats and municipalities across Thrissur district. Of the seven municipalities, the LDF is leading in five while the UDF is ahead in two. In gram panchayats, the LDF is leading in 50 panchayats compared to the UDF’s 29. The LDF is also ahead in block panchayats with leads in 11 seats, while the UDF leads in four. In the district panchayat, the LDF is leading in 21 divisions, with the UDF ahead in nine.
The National Democratic Alliance has made a significant gain in Ernakulam by winning the Thrippunithura municipality. The NDA secured 21 of the 53 wards, while the LDF was close behind with 20 seats. The United Democratic Front won 12 seats.

BJP state treasurer E. Krishna Das won the Pattikkara ward of Palakkad municipality by a large margin. He defeated UDF candidate Vinod Pattikkara by 415 votes.
Krishna Das is a former BJP Palakkad district president and was the vice chairperson of the outgoing municipal council. If the BJP wins power in Palakkad for a third straight term, he is being seen as a strong contender for the chairperson’s post.
Strong fight continues in Kozhikote Corporation. Last time, the situation was different in the corporation where LDF had a strong majority. Now, as there are a few more corporations to complete counting, it is not clear which front will have an upper hand
Four of the five former MLAs who contested the local body elections have won. Congress leader K. S. Sabarinadhan secured victory in the Kowdiar ward of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. R. Lathadevi of the CPI won the Chadayamangalam division of the Kollam district panchayat. CPI(M) leader K. C. Rajagopalan won from the Maramon ward of the Mezhuveli grama panchayat, while Congress candidate Anil Akkara emerged victorious in the Sanskrit College ward of the Adat grama panchayat.

The NDA is moving ahead with comfortable leads in 28 wards of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The LDF, which was leading earlier, has now fallen behind with leads in only 16 wards. The UDF has improved its performance and is leading in 13 wards. Meanwhile, former Congress MLA K. S. Sabarinathan has won the Kowdiar ward of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

Former DGP and NDA candidate R. Sreelatha won from Shasthamangal ward of the Thiruvananthapuram by a margin of over 700 votes. In Kowdiar, K. S. Sabarinathan is in the lead.
The Congress-led UDF has widened its lead by winning more wards, while the LDF appears to be losing momentum. By 10:49 AM, the UDF was leading in 503 local bodies, compared to the LDF’s lead in 472. The NDA remained far behind, with leads in only 35 wards.
The BJP-led NDA is in a distant third position in most urban and rural local bodies. However, in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, it is in the lead. As vote counting continues, the NDA is widening its lead over its close rival, the LDF. The BJP has traditionally been strong in Thiruvananthapuram.
In the 2020 local body elections, the BJP had led for a long time, but the LDF narrowly won in the end and elected 21-year-old Arya Rajendran as the youngest mayor in the country at that time.
Karat Faisal, whose candidature has repeatedly drawn attention due to past controversies, has lost the election in Koduvally municipality. His defeat in ward number 24 for 140 votes comes against the backdrop of a politically sensitive journey that began nearly a decade ago and continued to shadow successive elections in the region.

In the three-tier panchayats, the contest between the LDF and the UDF is neck and neck. The BJP-led NDA is far behind in grama panchayats, with the UDF leading in 350 seats, the LDF in 360, and the BJP in 31.
In block panchayats, the LDF is leading in 73 seats, the UDF in 68, and the NDA in 2.
In district panchayats, the LDF is ahead in 8 seats, while the UDF leads in 6.
