The Kerala government announced that pilgrims visiting the Sabarimala temple without booking in the virtual queue system will still be able to have darshan. This is a shift from the earlier decision to allow entry only through online registration, following protests from different groups.
CM Vijayan’s Assurance in the Assembly
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, speaking in the Assembly, assured that arrangements will be made for pilgrims who come without registering online. “We will ensure a smooth darshan for those who haven’t registered or are unaware of the online system,” Vijayan said, responding to concerns raised by CPI-M MLA V Joy.
Spot Booking System Still Unclear
Though the CM confirmed the availability of darshan without online registration, he didn’t clarify whether the spot booking system from last year would continue. He noted that an evaluation meeting on October 5 had discussed the possibility of allowing spot bookings again, with a focus on providing a secure and hassle-free experience for all pilgrims.

Benefits of the Virtual Queue System
Vijayan highlighted that the virtual queue system offers a digital record of pilgrims, enhancing safety and allowing authorities to track individuals in case of emergencies. The system, modeled after successful implementations at places like Tirupati, was introduced at Sabarimala in 2011, and the government plans to improve it further for the upcoming season starting mid-November.
Political Opposition to Online-Only Booking
The CM’s statement came after the BJP threatened to launch protests if the government enforced online-only darshan. The Congress-led UDF also called for retaining spot booking, arguing that many devotees might not be familiar with the online system. Even the CPI, a key ally in the ruling LDF, advised keeping both spot and virtual booking options.
Booking Options for Sabarimala Pilgrims
Currently, pilgrims can either book their darshan and prasadam online through the official website or use spot booking at centers designated by the Devaswom Board. The government aims to ensure better facilities and smoother experiences for all pilgrims this season, while maintaining safety and convenience.
