Despite the shockwaves from the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Kashmir’s tourism sector is demonstrating remarkable resilience, with thousands of visitors continuing to explore the region’s stunning landscapes. From the picturesque vistas of Sonamarg to the serene beauty of Doodhpathri and the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg, tourist arrival remains active, dispelling fears of a mass cancellations.
Director of Tourism Raja Yaqoob reported a strong influx of tourists, he said “Currently, we have over 1,300 tourists in Srinagar. Just yesterday, more than 5,000 people enjoyed the Gondola ride in Gulmarg, and today, an additional 4,683 tourists booked tickets. This clearly indicates that confidence in Kashmir’s tourism circuit is intact.”
Tour operators corroborated this sentiment, noting that bookings have remained steady following the attack. “Cabs are still transporting visitors to popular destinations. Tourists are visiting Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, and Gulmarg as usual. The narrative of a mass tourist flight is exaggerated,” said Javed Dar, a srinagar based travel agent.
What stands out most is the overwhelming support from locals aimed at reassuring visitors during this challenging time. In the face of adversity, Kashmiris have gone above and beyond to provide care and comfort to tourists.
“I have never felt so cared for in any tourist destination,” said Nisha Agarwal, a tourist from Maharashtra reveling in the snow at Sonamarg. “Locals constantly check on us to see if we need anything. It’s truly heartwarming.”
Ajay Sharma, who chose to remain in Gulmarg after the incident, echoed his sentiments: “While the Pahalgam attack shocked everyone, the way the locals looked after us made all the difference. We never felt unsafe.”
Officials believe that the solidarity shown by locals during this crisis sends a powerful message to the world. “Tourists are not just safe here; they are being embraced. That’s what truly defines Kashmir,” said Director tourism.
