However, the heavy snowfall has prompted the government to close several schools and educational institutions in northern Kashmir, with Gurez, Machhil, and Keran announcing holidays today. Additionally, key highways including Srinagar-Leh, Mughal Road, and Sinthan Top have been shut down due to hazardous conditions.

The Meteorological Department has reported a drop in temperatures across the valley, with a decrease of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in the plains are expected to continue for the next 24 hours, although an improvement in weather conditions is anticipated by tomorrow afternoon.

Authorities have issued advisories for travelers, tourists, and transporters to adhere to traffic regulations due to slippery roads in higher areas. Farmers have also been advised to pause any agricultural activities until March 16, as the region faces an avalanche warning in snowbound areas.

The recent precipitation comes as a much-needed relief after January and February saw negligible rainfall, leading to the drying up of water bodies and contributing to rampant forest fires. The renewed snowfall and rain have rekindled hope among locals who have been grappling with the impact of this winter’s unusual dryness.
