Tension escalated in Maddur town of Mandya district on Sunday when communal clashes broke out during the immersion of Lord Ganesha’s idol, police said. The situation escalated when some miscreants allegedly threw stones, resulting in chaos in the area. 8 people were badly injured in the attack and have been admitted to the hospital. Taking action in the violence and stone pelting case, the police have arrested 21 people.
Other Incidents During Ganesh Visarjan
On September 5, a violent clash broke out between the Yavad and Rawat communities during Ganesh immersion in Sesai Sadak village of Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. Both sides clashed with sticks and several vehicles were set on fire, causing chaos there. The police registered an FIR on the basis of complaints from both sides and deployed security forces in the area. On the same day, violence broke out during Ganesh immersion near Moti Masjid in Ujjain. Tension spread in the area due to stone pelting on the procession and many people were injured due to stampede. The police had to use force to control the situation.
Earlier on August 26, eggs were thrown at the procession during Ganesh immersion in Vadodara, Gujarat. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called this incident an insult to the Hindu festival and protested against it. On August 27, an incident of murder was also reported in a Ganpati pandal in Mandavali area of Delhi.
