Dengue is an illness transmitted by the bite of the Aedes mosquito. It leads to high fever, headaches, and muscle and joint pain. Dengue causes a rapid drop in the body’s platelet count, requiring immediate hospitalization to prevent potential fatalities from untreated conditions. Identifying its symptoms is crucial for effective treatment of dengue.
Dengue symptoms typically show up 4 to 6 days after infection:
- Fever rises high.
- Headaches occur.
- Eyes ache.
- Muscles and joints hurt.
- Feeling tired.
- Feeling nauseous.
- Vomiting happens.
- Skin gets red marks.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dengue is widespread in over 100 countries worldwide, affecting approximately three billion people who live in dengue-prone regions. These areas include India, Southeast Asia, China, Africa, Taiwan, and Mexico. In 2019, India alone reported over 67,000 cases of dengue, according to data from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP).
