Karnataka: An 11-year-old girl from Tumkur, Karnataka was reportedly sold by her aunt to settle a ₹35,000 debt. Fortunately, the Tumakuru city police successfully rescued her in Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh, and returned her to her hometown, according to police reports.
The minor girl was sent to her aunt’s house in Hindupur in April for vacation, as she was studying in the fourth grade. The aunt had assured her sister that she would take care of the girl but was allegedly involved in selling her instead. The aunt sold her niece to a landlord named Sriramulu for ₹35,000 to settle a loan.
Sriramulu kept the girl captive and made her graze ducks. When Chaudamma visited Hindupur in the last week of June, she found her daughter working for the landlord.

She urgently requested her daughter’s release, but despite her desperate pleas, Sriramulu refused to free the girl. He insisted that he had purchased her and demanded repayment of the loan to release her.
The district superintendent assigned the city police to rescue the young girl. The police successfully located her and returned her to Tumakuru on Wednesday. Sujatha (30), her husband Shankar (35), and landlord Sriramulu (40) have been charged under IPC Sections 137 (kidnapping) and 140 (wrongful confinement). An investigation is underway, and further action will be taken accordingly.
The girl has been placed in a safe environment, and additional measures are being taken to ensure her well-being and address the legal aspects of the case.
