Karnataka: In a deeply distressing incident in Haveri, Karnataka, a woman faced a brutal gang rape allegedly orchestrated by seven men from her community. The victim, who was involved in an interfaith relationship, recounted the harrowing incident before a judicial magistrate. The assault took place in a hotel room in Hangal taluk, located 80 km from Hubli, just four days ago.

Karnataka – Details of the Assault:
The complainant, accompanied by her male companion, shared a horrifying tale of being forcibly taken to a forested area near Nalkuru Cross of Hangal. There, she was subjected to sexual assault by all seven men, while her companion was reportedly beaten. A video statement depicting her ordeal has circulated on social media, adding to the gravity of the situation.
Desperate Pleas Ignored:
The survivor recounted her desperate pleas for mercy, expressing that she pleaded with folded hands, but the perpetrators were unyielding. After the assault, three of the assailants allegedly dropped her at a bus stop, from where she managed to reach her home. Though she does not know their names, she asserted her ability to identify them if presented before her.

Karnataka – Arrests Made:
In a significant development, three of the seven suspects have been apprehended. Aftab Maqbul Ahmed Chandanakatti, Madarasab Mohammad Isak Mandakki, and Abdul Khader Jafersab Hanchinamani are in custody. The arrest comes after the survivor’s video statement to the media aligned with her account recorded by the magistrate.
Shift in Legal Approach:
Originally perceived as a case of moral policing, the severity of the incident has prompted a shift in the legal approach. Police now plan to restructure the FIR, intending to invoke Section 376D (rape by one or more people with common intention) against the accused. The assault is now treated as a serious crime demanding a thorough investigation.
