A big order from the Karnataka High Court has been issued regarding the suspension of the bike taxi services in the state. This order from the Karnataka High Court came on April 2, 2025. As per the order, they cannot run the bike taxi services in the state unless necessary guidelines are issued. The High Court gave three months to the Karnataka Government to frame rules for the bike taxi services under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
This big move came after a petition filed by taxi aggregators. The Karnataka Government has opposed the petition filed by the aggregators. The state government called it illegal, stating that the bikers with the private number plates cannot operate commercially.
Justice BM Shyam Prasad mentioned that the transport department cannot be forced to register motorcycles as transport vehicles or issue contract carriage permits for bike taxis without a proper regulatory framework.
The court instructed petitioners to follow its directive. A report from 2019 established that regulators needed to create clear guidelines because it assessed the risk to traffic safety when bike taxis operated beyond previous authorization. The bike taxi services of Ola, Uber and Rapido operate within Bengaluru and Mysuru cities currently.
