V Srinivasa Prasad, a prominent figure in Karnataka politics and a Member of Parliament representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Chamarajanagar, passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Sunday night. He was 76 years old and had been in the ICU for the past four days. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Prasad’s political journey spanned nearly five decades, beginning with his involvement in the erstwhile Janata Party in 1976. Over the years, he had affiliations with various political parties including the Congress, JD(S), JD(U), and the Samata Party before eventually aligning with the BJP.

During his tenure in politics, Prasad held several significant positions. He served as the Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1999 to 2004. Later, he joined the Congress, was elected as an MLA in 2013, and assumed the role of revenue and religious endowment minister in the Siddaramaiah government.
In 2016, Prasad resigned from the Karnataka Assembly and returned to the BJP. He contested the 2017 Nanjangud bypolls on a BJP ticket but faced defeat. However, he made a successful comeback by winning the Lok Sabha election from Chamarajanagar in 2019.
