Parliament Monsoon Session

Karnataka Assembly Polls: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal Friday allegedly called Congress former president Sonia Gandhi a “Visha kanya” (venomous woman).

“Is Sonia Gandhi a venomous woman? She worked with China and Pakistan as their agent,” said the BJP MLA while addressing a public rally.

“People have accepted that PM Modi is a world leader. How can Congress compare such a leader to a poisonous snake? The Congress leaders are giving such statements by dancing to the tune of Sonia Gandhi”, Yatnal said, quoted Deccan Herald.

Congress hits back at BJP

Taking note of the BJP MLA’s statement, KPCC chief DK Shivakumar launched an attack at the BJP asking to expel him. The Congress leader has demaneded an apology from PM Modia and state Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai to issue an apology to “insult Sonia Gandhi.”

Meanwhile, Congress MP KC Venugopal said the BJP “hurl new abuses to insult Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji, who has led her entire life with utmost dignity and grace.”

BJP continues to stoop to new lows, with their filthy language against our leaders. Modi ji, do you endorse these words? Yadha raja thada Praja,” wrote the Congress leader.

The remarks came in a bid to counter Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s barb against Prime Minister Narendra Modi that triggered the row of the political slugfest.

A day earlier while campaigning for the Karnataka Assembly Polls at Ron in Gadag district in the state, Kharge said “Prime minister Narendra Modi is like a poisonous snake… beware it will lead to your death.

Reacting to the statement, Union Minister Smriti Irani called it an attack on India while, BJP’s IT Cell chief Amit Malviya said the grand-old party ‘continues to plummet to new depths’.

However, the Congress president later clarified that his “poisonous snake” remarks were against the ideology that BJP promotes and not the PM.

“BJP’s ideology is divisive, hostile and full of hatred and prejudice towards the poor and Dalits. I discussed the politics of hatred and malice. My statement was neither for PM Modi personally nor for any other person… but for the ideology he represents.,” Kharge posted on Twitter.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
