Karnataka: A police station in Channagiri town, Karnataka was attacked and multiple vehicles were torched by an angry crowd following the reported death of a 30-year-old man in police custody early Saturday morning.

According to officials, the unrest started after the death of a man named Adil, who was detained by Channagiri police on May 24 for suspected involvement in gambling. Police stated that the 30-year-old resident of Tippu Nagar fell ill shortly after arrival at the station and was promptly taken to the hospital, where he later died. However, Adil’s family alleges that his death was due to torture while in police custody.

As news of the death spread, a large crowd, including family members of the deceased, gathered at the Channagiri police station, vandalizing police vehicles and throwing stones at the station.

Davangere Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth stated that the body had been transferred to the government hospital and would be released to the family members following a post-mortem examination in the presence of a magistrate.

They also stated that Adil’s parents were aware of the situation and had been informed of the circumstances surrounding his death, as per the report.

Despite the police’s efforts to persuade the protesters, the situation remained tense, with reports of four cases being filed and seven police vehicles and eleven personnel sustaining injuries during the violent clashes. Authorities have deployed additional forces in Channagiri to maintain law and order and ensure a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
