New Delhi: India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas everyday July 26, a day etched in golden letters in the annals of its history. It marks the triumphant victory of the Indian Armed Forces against Pakistani intruders in the Kargil War. It also serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and bravery of our soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the nation's sovereignty.
Kargil War 1999: A moment of reckoning for India
The Kargil War of 1999 was a moment of reckoning, when India stood firm against aggression and thwarted Pakistan's attempts to capture the strategic region of Kashmir. Our valiant jawans exhibited unparalleled courage and determination in the face of adversity, reminding Pakistan of its rightful status.
Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse's remarkable show of courage
One such remarkable soldier was Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, who exhibited extraordinary courage during the battle. Climbing the treacherous terrain of Drass at an altitude of 16,000 feet and enduring temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees, Captain Kenguruse led the charge against the enemy.
In a daring move, he took off his shoes and socks to gain a better foothold on the slippery rock, ultimately leading his comrades to victory by neutralizing seven Pakistani bunkers.
Brigadier MPS Bajwa's act of humanity
Another heartening incident during the war came to light when a captured Pakistani soldier, Mohammad Ashraf, encountered Brigadier MPS Bajwa of the Indian Army. The Pakistani soldier was deeply moved by the Brigadier's compassion and respectful treatment, an experience he had never encountered in his own country. Such acts of humanity amidst conflict serve as a reminder of the nobility and honor upheld by the Indian Armed Forces.
India's triumph was also bolstered by the support of other nations, with Israel providing crucial assistance. The use of Mirage fighter jets equipped with advanced Lightning electro-optical targeting pods facilitated precise targeting of enemy positions, a turning point in the war.
Furthermore, a mix-up in communication inadvertently led to an early announcement of the victory at Tiger Hill by the Defense Minister George Fernandes, despite the hill not yet being fully captured. However, true to the Indian spirit, our soldiers soon conquered the peak and unfurled the Indian flag, cementing their triumph.
