A day after resigning from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), former Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. Gahlot was welcomed into the BJP by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and BJP National Vice President Baijayant Panda.

Gahlot Denies Pressure Behind Move

Addressing speculation around his decision, Gahlot clarified that his move to the BJP was neither sudden nor influenced by external forces. “Some people might think this decision was taken overnight or under pressure, but I want to make it clear that I have never acted under anyone’s pressure,” he said. Refuting allegations of coercion by agencies like the ED and CBI, Gahlot termed such claims as baseless.

Disillusionment with AAP’s Approach

Explaining his departure from AAP, Gahlot cited a drift from the party’s original values. He expressed disappointment over AAP’s ongoing conflicts with the central government, which he claimed hindered Delhi’s development. “The purpose for which we came together is no longer visible today. Constant clashes with the Centre prevent Delhi’s progress,” he remarked. Gahlot emphasized that collaboration with the central government is crucial for Delhi’s growth, adding, “This is why I have joined the BJP, inspired by the vision and policies of the Prime Minister.”

Criticism of AAP’s Governance

Gahlot accused AAP of prioritizing political ambitions over public welfare. He criticized controversies like the ‘Sheeshmahal’ incident, which he said undermined the party’s claim of being truly representative of the common man. Gahlot also highlighted AAP’s failure to address key issues, including cleaning the Yamuna River, as examples of the government losing focus on governance.

AAP Alleges Pressure from Central Agencies

Reacting to Gahlot’s exit, AAP leaders alleged that he had no choice but to join BJP due to ongoing ED and CBI investigations against him. They accused the BJP of orchestrating a “dirty political conspiracy” by misusing central agencies to pressure opposition leaders.

This move comes as a significant setback for AAP ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.
