President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice DY Chanderchud at the Rashtrapati Bhavan swearing-in ceremony. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and others attended.

Chief Justice UU Lalit, who retired on November 9, is succeeded by Justice Chanderchud.

Country’s 50th Chief Justice

On Wednesday, Justice D Y Chandrachud, the senior-most judge on the Supreme Court of India, became the country’s 50th Chief Justice. He will be in office until November 10, 2024.

Last month, the Centre Government announced the appointment of Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, a Supreme Court Judge, as Chief Justice of India, effective November 9, 2022.

According to the press release, “the President is pleased to appoint Dr Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, with effect from November 9, 2022, in exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India.”

First time in the judiciary history: Father and son have served as Chief Justice

Justice YV Chandrachud, Justice Chandrachud’s father, served as India’s 16th Chief Justice from February 2, 1978, to July 11, 1985.

This is the first time in the history of the judiciary that a father and son have served as Chief Justice.

Justice Chandrachud, his work

Justice Chandrachud is well-known in the country as a progressive and liberal judge. He is also regarded as being extremely sensitive to citizens’ fundamental rights, and his most distinguishing feature is his tough stance toward abusers.

On May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud, who was born on November 11, 1959, was appointed to the Supreme Court.

From October 31, 2013, until his appointment to the Supreme Court, he served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

From March 29, 2000, until his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Chandrachud was a judge on the Bombay High Court.

From 1998 until his appointment as a judge in the Bombay High Court, he was also the Additional Solicitor General of India. In June 1998, the Bombay High Court designated him as a senior advocate.
