Junagad violence: One person killed in clashes that was erupted after civic body officials served notice to the Dargah authority for presenting documents regarding the alleged encroachment. Large number of people pelted stone on police personnel over the notice to present documents or face removal of alleged encroachment, police informed on Saturday.
Junagad Municipal corporation gave notice to the Dargah management asking for presenting documents within five days. Angered over the alleged anti-encroachment drive, craowd of over 500 gathered around the dargah situated near the Majewadi Gate and pelted stones at police officials, vandalised property and set police vehicles on fire.
There was a lot of ruckus in Junagadh district of Gujarat on Friday night over an illegal dargah. People got agitated over the notice issued by the administration regarding the illegal construction of the dargah. The mob targeted the police. The police station at Majewadi Chowk was attacked and vehicles were set on fire. Stones were also pelted at the police station. During this one person died. While the Deputy SP and three policemen were injured. At present the situation is under control.

Junagadh SP Ravi Teja Vasamsetty informed that a mosque near Majewadi Gate was served a notice by the Junagadh Municipal Corporation to produce documents within 5 days. Around 500-600 people had gathered on Friday night. The police was convincing them not to block the road.
At around 10:15 pm stones were pelted and people came to attack the police. Police lathicharged to disperse the crowd. Policemen have been injured in this incident. 174 people have been arrested. Prima facie a civilian has died due to stone pelting, but it will be clear after the postmortem report comes. Further investigation is on.
In fact, the officials of Junagadh Municipal Corporation had reached outside the dargah in front of the Majewadi Gate to put up a demolition notice. The civic body’s notice states that the dargah was built illegally. The authorities gave a deadline of five days with proof that the dargah was built illegally or else it would be demolished. The cost of demolition will have to be borne by the management.
This notice created an uproar and the miscreants gathered near the dargah and pelted stones at the police. As violence broke out, a large number of police officers were sent to the area to bring the situation under control. At present the situation is peaceful.
