Rahul Gandhi's conviction in defamantion case

New Delhi: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday alleged that several judges were changed to hear the ‘Modi surname’ defamantion case, in which party’s former chief Rahul Gandhi has been convicted.

“He has been granted bail. We knew from the beginning because they kept changing judges. We believe in law, judiciary and we will fight against this as per law,” said Kharge.

His remarks came after the Surat District Court on Thursday awarded imprisonment of 2 years to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi allegedly for making remarks at a Lok Sabha polls rally in Karnataka on April 13, 2019.

Later, the court granted bail to Gandhi. Meanwhile, the order has been suspended till next 30 days so that the Congress MP can appeal in the High Court.

Senior Congress leader and sister of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also posted a tweet saying that her brother “has never been afraid, nor will he ever be” and will continue to speak truth.

She alleged that there is a entire machinery of scared power behind Rahul Gandhi to suppress his voice. She said, “My brothers has never been afraid, nor will he ever be. Have lived speaking the truth, will continue to speak the truth. He will continue to raise the voice of the people of the country. The power of truth and the love of crores of countrymen are with him.”

Moments later of the order being pronounced, Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to quote Mahatama Gandhi. He wrote, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get it.”

Modi surname defamation case

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi who had filed the defamation case against Gandhi on Thursday said that he welcomed the order of of the court.

BJP Hits Out At Gandhi 

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters in New Delhi, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the Congress for ‘not telling the truth.’

In his statement, the BJP MP said, A court in Surat has sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years in a defamation case. Congress party is saying a lot but it is not telling that what did Rahul Gandhi say?”

“Rahul Gandhi had said in the 2019 election rally in Karnataka… Why is Modi the surname of all thieves?” he added.

The BJP leader also said, “If Rahul Gandhi has the right to insult and abuse people with his stubbornness, then the people suffering from his abuse have the right to file a defamation case.”

AAP Speaks in Favor of Congress “Despite Differences” 

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reacted to the court’s verdict and alleged that there is a conspiracy against all non-BJP leaders.

He said, “A conspiracy is being hatched to eliminate non-BJP leaders and parties by prosecuting them. We have differences with the Congress, but it is not right to implicate Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case like this. It is the job of the public and the opposition to ask questions. We respect the court but disagree with the decision.”
