Punjab and Haryana have often come face to face on the issue of water, and there has been sharp politics on this subject. Now, this conflict is seen between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while speaking in Jammu today, said that he has no resources to give water to Punjab. He has strongly opposed the proposed 113 km long canal project to deliver water to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
Omar said in clear words that there are drought-like conditions in Jammu and Kashmir; in such a situation, they cannot give water to Punjab. Reacting to this, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema called Omar Abdullah’s statement inappropriate and said that the Akali Dal did not expect this. He alleged that Punjab has already been subjected to injustice regarding water, and Rajasthan is already getting more water than it needs.
Omar Abdullah also said that Jammu and Kashmir will first use its water resources for itself. He also added that Punjab already has water available under the Indus Water Treaty, and when Jammu and Kashmir needed water, no one helped. It is worth mentioning that the Indus Water Treaty was stopped after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, after which the demand for diverting the water of the rivers is gaining momentum.
