Nowgam blast: A massive explosion occurred near the premises of Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar on Friday night. Several people have been reportedly injured in the blast, and the injured have been hospitalised. The explosion was so powerful that it affected the surrounding areas and reports of fire have also emerged. According to the latest update, at least nine people have been killed and more than 29 have been injured. Preliminary inputs suggest that an explosion occurred while a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), accompanied by a tehsildar, naib tehsildar, and several police personnel, were conducting sampling of ammonium nitrate and other materials recovered from a recently busted white-collar terrorist module in Faridabad Haryana.
Upon receiving the information, security personnel reached the spot, and sniffer dogs were also deployed to carry out the investigation. The Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, Akshay Labroo also visited the hospital to meet the victims injured in the blast. Several vehicles in the compound were damaged. Fire trucks were quickly sent to the police station after the blast. All roads leading to the station have been closed.
Police sources confirmed that around 2,900 kilograms of seized explosives, earlier recovered from Faridabad, were being scientifically examined when the incident took place. The impact of the blast was so powerful that it completely destroyed the police station structure and caused damage to surrounding residential buildings in a wide radius.
Rescue teams, including the police, SDRF, and fire services, rushed to the site and launched a massive operation to recover those trapped under the debris. As of late evening, eight bodies had been retrieved, while the death toll had climbed to nine amid fears that the number could rise further.
