In a major security development ahead of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY-2025), Jammu and Kashmir Police detained a terrorist over-ground worker (OGW) using a newly implemented Facial Recognition System (FRS) near Pahalgam in Anantnag district. This marks the first instance of such a detention in the Valley utilizing advanced facial recognition technology.
The incident occurred at the Langanbal Naka checkpoint, where the FRS detected the individual, a resident of Seer Hamdan within the jurisdiction of Police Station Mattan. The suspect, who has a prior FIR registered against him from 2005 and was working as a carpenter, was promptly handed over to Police Station Pahalgam for further legal proceedings, as confirmed by a senior police official.
This swift action underscores the effectiveness of technology-driven policing, particularly as preparations intensify for the upcoming yatra. The police statement emphasized that this operation serves as a clear deterrent to potential miscreants and terrorist associates during this critical time.
In addition to the FRS deployment, forces has significantly bolstered electronic surveillance along all access routes for the pilgrimage to ensure a safe and seamless experience for devotees. Authorities have made it clear that any attempts to disrupt public order or threaten the safety of pilgrims will be swiftly identified and addressed under the law.
Elaborate security arrangements are in place across Jammu and Kashmir in view of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. The Yatra routes from Pahalgam and Baltal have also been declared no-flying zones, and helicopter services for pilgrims have been suspended this year due to security concerns.
