In the past few weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has been hit by several avalanches.  On the very first day of  February,  two Polish tourists were killed and 21 were trapped when a massive avalanche hit the upper reaches of a ski resort in Gulmarg.

In Mid january Gurez sector had experienced two avalanches on the same day, during the same time period, two avalanches occurred simultaneously in the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in Ganderbal in central Kashmir.
