Days after the tragic Kishtwar cloudburst, another disaster struck Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. At least seven people were killed and six others injured after a cloudburst hit parts of Kathua district during the intervening night of August 16 and 17. Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma said the flash floods have washed away several main roads.
A few houses in the Ghati area were buried under debris and floodwaters. Damage has also been reported along the Jammu–Pathankot National Highway. Rescue operations are currently underway.

In a post on X, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh confirmed the loss of lives and damage to land and property. He said, “Spoken to SSP Kathua Sh. Shobhit Saxena, after receiving information about a cloud burst in the Janglote area. 4 Casualties reported. In addition, damage has occurred to the Railway track and the National Highway, while the Police Station in Kathua has been affected. The civilian Administration, Military, and Paramilitary have swung into action. The situation is being continuously monitored. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.”
He added that helicopter services have been arranged to shift the injured to appropriate hospitals. Six injured individuals have been airlifted for hospitalization to Mamoon, Pathankot, which was found to be the relatively nearest destination.

A joint team of the police and SDRF is currently carrying out rescue operations in the village. According to media reports, landslides have occurred in Bagard and Changda villages, as well as in Dilwan-Hutli in Lakhanpur.
