Abid Hussain, an assistant professor at Jamia Millia Islamia University, who had been suspended in February over allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct, has now been cleared of all charges, resulting in the lifting of his suspension.
This decision comes after both the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and an inquiry committee concluded their investigations into the accusations against Hussain, a member of the Department of Psychology.
An official order from the university stated, “Following the submission of reports by the committees to the Vice-Chancellor, no action or penalty has been recommended, except a strict warning to both parties by the disciplinary inquiry committee. Considering these recommendations, the Vice-Chancellor has approved the immediate revocation of the suspension.”
The order also noted, “As no penalty has been imposed on Dr. Abid Hussain, the period of his suspension, from February 22 until the date of his rejoining, will be considered as time spent on duty for all purposes.”
Hussain had been suspended after a written complaint filed by seven faculty members from the Department of Psychology, accusing him of aggression, abusive language, and physical assault against the department head in the presence of the Dean during a meeting. The complaint further alleged unwelcome advances amounting to attempted sexual assault on the dean.
Dismissing the accusations as a conspiracy by other faculty members, Hussain expressed relief at being exonerated but lamented the personal toll his ten-month suspension had taken on his life. He highlighted the absence of mechanisms to address false complaints and expressed gratitude for the truth prevailing in the investigation.
