With tensions between India and Pakistan growing, a sweet shop in Jaipur is in the headlines for changing its name of several of its traditional sweets. Tyohaar Sweets, who specializes in luxury and handmade sweets, took “Pak” out of the name of its sweets and are using Shree.
Conventionally, the suffix “Pak” in emblematic sweets like Mysore Pak suggests that a sugary syrup (called pak in Kannada) is made during cooking. In Sanskrit, ‘Paka’ simply means “to cook.” While none of these linguistic roots relate to Pakistan, Tyohaar Sweets decided to eliminate “Pak” from their sweets, and Anjali Jain, owner of Tyohaar Sweets, said to News18: “We decided to drop it in the spirit of patriotism.”
So, of all time favorites that gave people sweet cravings like Moti Pak, Aam Pak, Gond Pak and Mysore Pak have today been renamed Moti Shree, Aam Shree, Gond Shree and Mysore Shree at this shop.
Even the most premium offerings of the shop, Swarn Bhasm Pak and Chandi Bhasma Pak have been rebranded. A picture of the sweet shop changing their display to new names went viral.
Earlier, a post by an X user ‘Tathvam-asi’ asked netizens to comment if Mysore Pak should get a name change. The user shared a photo of the dish with the overlaid text “Mysore Pak should be changed to Mysore Bharat”, and curiously wrote, “Came across this. What’s your take on this?”. The post gathered mixed reactions, but the internet didn’t expect a sweet store taking up rebranding seriously.
