Jaipur: The Malviya Nagar police have arrested a criminal who had been absconding for the past 17 years. The accused, Chetan Singhwal, not only changed his appearance to evade from police and the law but also began the process of gender transition, adopting the identity of ‘Chetna’ and preparing to join the transgender community. The police had been running a special surveillance operation for months to catch him and finally succeeded in arresting him.

According to the police, the case resembles the plot of a thriller movie or novel—where the criminal hides his true identity and deceives the police for years.

On The Run For 17 Years After The Crime

The case dates back to 2008. Under the case number 110/2008 (Section 457, 380 IPC) registered at the Malviya Nagar police station, Chetan Singhwal was arrested and was sent to central jail on February 13, 2008. However, after being released on bail, he failed to appear in court and went absconding. Consequently, the court issued a permanent arrest warrant against him.

Criminal Unmasked Through Police Operation

Under the direction of Jaipur East Deputy Commissioner of Police Tejaswini Gautam (IPS), a special campaign was launched to apprehend absconding criminals. Based on confidential information, the Malviya Nagar police team—led by Additional DCP Asharam Choudhary (RPS), ACP Aditya Poonia (RPS), and SHO Sangram Singh—arrested Chetan Singhwal.

Changed Appearance, Name, And Was Preparing To Join Transgender Community

Shocking revelations came to light during interrogation after the arrest. The accused revealed that he had been preparing for gender transition for a long time. He had started calling himself ‘Chetna’, adopted the clothing and mannerisms of the transgender community, and had nearly completed all rituals and paperwork required to join the community. He had even scheduled a medical appointment for the gender transition surgery—only the final step remained.

The 37-year-old accused, Chetan Singhwal, is a resident of Prem Nagar, Agra Road, under Kanota police station limits in Jaipur. Police are now investigating whether Chetan was involved in any other criminal activities during his time on the run. His arrest may also help uncover several old unresolved cases.
