Vice President Oath: Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar took oath as the 14th Vice President of the country on Thursday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office and secrecy to Dhankhar.
Many Union ministers including PM Modi and Venkaiah Naidu were present at Dhankhar’s swearing-in ceremony. NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar defeated the opposition candidate Margaret Alva by a huge margin. Dhankhar got 528 votes while Alva got only 182 votes.
Jagdeep Dhankhar is from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan
Jagdeep Dhankhar, who hails from Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, did his schooling from Sainik School, Chittorgarh. After graduation in Physics, he did LLB from Rajasthan University. By 1988, Jagdeep Dhankhar had joined the famous lawyers of the country. Dhankhar became a senior advocate in the Rajasthan High Court in 1990.
After this, he practiced in the Supreme Court to the High Courts of many states of the country. He was instrumental in getting Other Backward Class (OBC) status to the Jat community in Rajasthan.
Jagdeep Dhankhar’s political career
In a political career spanning 33 years, Dhankhar has traveled to the post of Vice President of the country. He came into active politics in the year 1989.
In 1989, he won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time on a Janata Dal ticket from his home constituency Jhunjhunu. After this he was made a Union Minister in 1990. Apart from this, Dhankhar has tried his hand in the politics of Rajasthan. He was also the MLA from Kishangarh in Ajmer district from 1993 to 1998. Before becoming the Vice President, he became the Governor of West Bengal in July 2019.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is the second from Rajasthan to become Vice President
Jagdeep Dhankhar is the second leader of Rajasthan after Bhairon Singh Shekhawat to be elected the Vice President of India. Hailing from Jhunjhunu district, the Jat leader Dhankhar represents the Kota-Bundi parliamentary constituency. Earlier, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat had held the position as the 11th Vice President.
