External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his address at general Debate of the 79th UN General Assembly lashed out at Pakistan over terrorism and voiced for global south.
In his address, he talked about various issues like the changes after covid pandemic, Ukraine war, conflict of Gaza, Climate change, food security, trade practices, terrorism, representation at US, roadmap of India, motto of Viksit Bharat etc.
Jaishankar Hits Back At Pakistan
Jaishankar in his speech slammed Pakistan for terrorism across border and also took a dig at the statement made by Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif at UN over Jammu and Kashmir and India.
He again cleared India’s firm stand on terrorism. Jaishankar said, “Terrorism is antithetical of everything that the world stands for. All its forms and manifestations must be resolutely opposed. The sanctioning of global terrorists by the United Nations should also not be impeded for political reason.”
Hitting back at Pakistan he said, “Many countries get left behind due to circumstances beyond their control. But some make conscious choices with disastrous consequences. A premier example is our neighbour, Pakistan. Unfortunately, their misdeeds affect others as well, especially the neighbourhood.”
He said that Pakistan is facing its karma. “Today, we see the ills it sought to visit on others consume its own society. It can’t blame the world; this is only karma,” added Jaishankar.
What did EAM Say On Cross Border Terrorism?
He addressed the issue of Cross border terrorism. “A dysfunctional nation coveting the lands of others must be exposed and must be countered. We heard some bizarre assertions from it at this forum yesterday. So let me make India’s position perfectly clear,” said Jaishankar.
He asserted that Pakistan’s cross-border terrorism policy will never succeed. And it can have no expectation of impunity. On the contrary, actions will certainly have consequences. The issue to be resolved between us is now only the vacation of illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan. And of course the abandonment of Pakistan’s longstanding attachment to terrorism.
Other Issues Addressed By S Jaishankar
Jaishankar said that the world is yet to recover from the damages of the Covid pandemic.
In his speech he also mentioned about war in Ukraine which is in its third year and the conflict in Gaza that is acquiring wider ramifications.
He also talked various global issues that effects everyone in general. He highlighted the issue of unfair trade practices that threaten jobs and technology advancements which have become a factor of anxiety. Climate events occur with greater intensity and frequency. Food security is as worrisome as health security.
Voicing For Global South And Effective Representation At The UN
He advocated that no nation should be left behind when it comes to addressing global concerns. “Large parts of the world cannot be left behind when it comes to deciding the key issues of our times. An effective and efficient UN, a more representative UN and a UN fit for purpose in the contemporary era, is essential,” said EAM.
“Leaving no one behind means advancing peace, ensuring sustainable development and strengthening human dignity. This cannot be delivered by a UN paralyzed when faced with division, conflict, terrorism and violence. Nor can it be advanced if access to food, fuel and fertilizer is jeopardized,” added Jaishankar.
He highlighted the importance of effective and efficient representative at the United Nations.
His Message From the UN
Jaishankar initiated to send a message from UNGA for everyone to come together. “Let us therefore send out a clear message from this UNGA Session: we are determined not to be left behind. By coming together, sharing experiences, pooling resources and strengthening our resolve, we can change the world for the better,” said EAM.
He also said, “But every change must begin somewhere. And there is no better place than where it all started. We, the members of the United Nations, must now seriously and purposefully address ourselves to that task.”
