India’s project Sudarshan Chakra could turn out to be a potential game-changer for Indo-Israeli defense collaboration, as Jerusalem has shown keen interest in joining the next-gen multifaceted air defense initiative. According to idrw.org, Israel has proposed to co-develop the advanced anti-drone interceptors.
‘System of Systems’ inspired by ‘Iron Dome’ to shield 20+ cities
At a time when India is speeding up its self-reliance in layered air defenses, what makes Project Sudarshan Chakra stand out is that it does not envision a single system but a ‘system of systems.’ This means the air defence grid – a beehive-like network will merge distinct technologies. Indian Defence Research Wing (IDRW) reported that Project Sudarshan Chakra draws inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome but is designed to counter continental threats.
Project to be rolled out in two phases
The project will blanket more than 20 Indian cities and is scheduled to be launched in two phases, reports added. Under Phase I, trials are expected to begin by 2027. This includes short- to medium-range intercepts, cruise missiles, tackling low-flying drones, and precision-guided artillery shells, idrw reported. Under Phase II, poised for the 2030s, high-end threats will be tackled with hypersonic glide vehicles, swarm attacks, and ballistic missiles.
“Beehive” Design
The project’s “beehive” design will link over a dozen existing and developmental systems, which include Akash and MRSAM, Project Kusha, BMD Phases I & II, etc. Israel is eyeing a partnership in the project, views Sudarshan Chakra as a symbiotic opportunity.
