Is Goa Really Empty This New Year? Viral Post Sparks Debate Over Decline In Tourism! Netizens Give THIS Reason

Tourists flock to Goa for its seafood, water sports, and the fusion of Portuguese culture. It remains packed with tourists year-round, with numbers increasing especially during occasions like New Year and Christmas.

Goa, with its beautiful beaches, tranquil weather, vibrant nightlife, and cultural heritage, is India’s most sought-after tourist destination. Tourists flock to Goa for its seafood, water sports, and the fusion of Portuguese culture. It remains packed with tourists year-round, with numbers increasing especially during occasions like New Year and Christmas.

Are Goa’s Streets Empty This New Year?

However, this year, Goa has made headlines for its empty streets during the peak New Year season. A post shared by user Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj on X has grabbed eyeballs.

In her post, Deepika highlighted that Goa is empty this year with hardly any tourists. She wrote, “Goa is almost empty. Hardly any tourists. It should be a wake-up call for the government. Hope they do something especially about the transport.”

She pointed out that the government should do something about transport.

Her post went viral in a short time and sparked debate and discussions among netizens. Several users agreed with her point and gave reasons for decline in the number of tourists during peak season.

Netizens Engage In Discussion, Give THIS Reason

Netizens underlined reasons like high travel and accommodation costs, local transport issues, and competition from more cost-effective Southeast Asian destinations for decline in Goa’s tourism.

Some users have even shared their personal experiences to prove their claims. A user wrote, “The hotels there are charging a bomb. Take Taj Aguada for example. Their buffet is crap and rooms are old. Yet the price was 30k per night during new year. Me and my gf were on the beach and atleast 10 locals started walking towards us. We came out got the hell out of there. People are rude and get into fights easily there. The locals feel they are from Portugal.”

Another added, “The current state of tourism in Goa reflects significant mismanagement. Taxi operators often engage in exploitative practices, yet services like Uber and Ola are still not permitted to operate in the state. Additionally, cleanliness standards are lacking, with tourist areas plagued by chaos and touts. Consequently, travelers are choosing more affordable, cleaner, and safer destinations like Bali, Vietnam, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sri Lanka. Alarmingly, airfare to Goa rivals that of international destinations. In a developing nation with a substantial low-income population, such high prices are perplexing. It’s imperative for authorities to address these issues to revitalize Goa’s tourism sector.”

Users went on to compare Goa with Thailand and pointed out that latter is much cheaper than Goa. A user wrote, “It’s not about transport, it’s about price they charge in Goa. Thailand trip is cheaper than Goa trip.” Another user added, “Have been saying, domestic travel has become unaffordable now in India. Govt need to understand and fix.”

While several users supported Deepika’s statement about Goa, others questioned it. A user wrote, “False information. Goa is fully packed.”

As the debate progressed about whether Goa is empty or not, she shared a video which was unusually less crowded. She wrote, “For those calling me a liar. This was last night on roads that used to be totally jampacked earlier around New Year.”
