On International Cheetah Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (December 5, 2025) said that Project Cheetah was an effort to restore the country's lost ecological heritage. To mark the occasion, he shared stunning photos of the majestic wild cat and called it 'one of the most remarkable creatures.' Meanwhile, the Prime Minister urged wildlife lovers and enthusiasts to visit India to see the animal in all its splendour, while reaffirming its protection.

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said that Project Cheetah, launched three years ago, was aimed at safeguarding this animal and reviving the ecosystem. "On International Cheetah Day, my best wishes to all wildlife lovers and conservationists dedicated to protecting the cheetah, one of our planet’s most remarkable creatures. Three years ago, our Government launched Project Cheetah with the aim of safeguarding this magnificent animal and restoring the ecosystem in which it can truly flourish. It was also an effort to revive lost ecological heritage and strengthen our biodiversity," he wrote on X.

PM Modi invites wildlife enthusiasts to India

In another post, PM Modi said that India is proud to be home to several cheetahs and that a significant number of the wild cat are born on Indian soil. "Many of them now thrive in the Kuno National Park and the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. It is heartening to see cheetah tourism growing in popularity as well. I encourage more wildlife enthusiasts from across the world to visit India and witness the cheetah in all its splendour," he added.

PM Modi highlights progress of Project Cheetah

PM Modi also praised the progress made in cheetah conservation, underscoring that it was possible due to the collective effort and support of the people, particularly the dedicated 'Cheetah Mitras.'

"Our progress in cheetah conservation has been possible only through the collective support of our people, especially our dedicated Cheetah Mitras. Protecting wildlife and living in harmony with nature are integral to India’s civilisational ethos, and we see that spirit alive today in these efforts," the Prime Minister said.

India - A home to 32 Cheetahs

As of December 2025, the country houses 32 cheetahs, including 21 born in India itself, according to reports. A recent milestone was achieved in November when Mukhi, an India-born female cheetah, delivered five healthy cubs. India reintroduced cheetahs in 2022 and 2023, with 8 brought from Namibia and 12 from South Africa.
