Newly-elected Congress President, in a tweet in Hindi, said, “On this day of martyrdom, I pay my respects to Indira Gandhi ji, India’s first female Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi’s contribution to making India a strong nation, whether in agriculture, the economy, or military power, is incomparable.”
The Congress said in a tweet from its official Twitter account that Indira Gandhi guided the country through its highs and lows, from the liberation of Bangladesh to the start of the Green Revolution.
“We salute her unyielding resilience and unwavering vision for the development of the nation,” the party said.
Indira Gandhi, the then-prime minister, was assassinated by two of her own security guards on this day in 1984.
