IndiGo flight cancellations continued for the ninth straight day, with over 70 new flights canceled, most of them from Bengaluru airport. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court heard a petition against the airline, taking note of the difficulties faced by passengers. The government had initially asked IndiGo to reduce its operations by 5% on Tuesday, but later increased the cut to 10%. The flight disruptions, which began on December 2, have continued for over a week.
Despite IndiGo’s claims that operations are stabilizing, cancellations have persisted for nine days, and further disruptions are expected today.
Early morning visuals from several Indian airports, including Delhi and Ahmedabad, showed passengers stranded due to ongoing flight cancellations and delays. More than 400 flights were canceled the previous day, with Delhi and Bengaluru being the worst affected, each recording over 100 cancellations.
Although IndiGo has assured that its operations are gradually stabilizing, the high number of cancellations in recent days suggests that some disruptions are likely to continue today.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has established an Oversight Team to keep a close watch on IndiGo’s operations. The team comprises eight senior Flight Operations Inspectors, with two officers permanently stationed at IndiGo’s corporate office in Gurgaon.
IndiGo cancelled more than 60 flights from Bengaluru Airport on Wednesday, even though CEO Pieter Elbers had stated a day earlier that operations were stabilising. According to airport sources, the airline scrapped a total of 61 flights—35 arrivals and 26 departures.
The Delhi airport issued an update amid the ongoing IndiGo disruptions, stating that all operations across its terminals are running smoothly and on time. It added that both arrivals and departures are proceeding as scheduled, assuring passengers that they can continue with their travel plans without concern.
While hearing a PIL on the ongoing IndiGo crisis, the Delhi High Court criticised the Centre for acting too late. The court noted that the government stepped in only after large-scale cancellations had already taken place, questioning why proactive measures weren’t taken sooner.
Mumbai airport authorities reportedly said on Tuesday that 905 IndiGo flight cancellations between December 1 and December 8 affected a total of 40,789 passengers, while another 2,66,567 travellers experienced significant delays due to the airline’s widespread operational disruptions.
The Delhi High Court is set to hear an urgent petition today regarding IndiGo’s widespread flight cancellations. The plea demands assistance and refunds for affected passengers. The bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela has scheduled the matter for a hearing on December 10.
