An employee of IndiGo Airlines has filed a police complaint against three senior officials of the airline, accusing them of making casteist remarks. The allegation relates to alleged remarks made during an official meeting. Officials confirmed the matter on Monday.
The complaint was initially registered as a zero FIR in Karnataka on May 21, which was later transferred to the DLF-1 police station in Gurugram. The zero FIR was registered based on the complaint filed by Sharan A., 35, a resident of Bengaluru. Since the incident took place in Gurugram, the Bengaluru police handed over the case to the police there.
The Gurugram police, after receiving the zero FIR, lodged a formal FIR at the DLF Phase-1 police station on Sunday. DLF Phase 1 SHO Rajesh Kumar said, “An FIR has been registered in the case and investigation has been started. All facts are being verified and necessary action will be taken under the law.”
IndiGo’s statement: The Allegations Are Baseless
IndiGo has completely rejected all the allegations calling them baseless and said that the company will fully cooperate with the investigating agencies if required.
A company spokesperson said, “IndiGo has a zero tolerance policy against discrimination, harassment and bias. We are committed to maintaining an inclusive and respectful workplace. We strongly refute these baseless allegations and stand firm on our core values of fairness, honesty and accountability.”
What Is Mentioned In The FIR?
The complainant says that he belongs to the ‘Adi Dravida’ community of the Scheduled Caste category, and he faced casteist remarks many times at the workplace.
According to the FIR, during a meeting on April 28, three IndiGo employees—Tapas Dey, Manish Sahni and Captain Rahul Patil—allegedly used abusive and casteist language towards him.
Sharan A. alleged:
“I was subjected to caste-based abuses, intimidation and discrimination. I was insulted in public. I have been targeted repeatedly before this as well, given warning letters without any concrete reason. Pay cuts, sick leaves denied, travel and ACM benefits cancelled. I was also pressured to resign.”
He also said that he had reported the incident to the company’s CEO and Ethics Committee, but no action was taken. He then sought the help of the police.
