Indian Vessel Hijacked With 18 Crew Members On Board: Navy

Indian Navy's warship, positioned strategically in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy measures, intercepted MV Ruen in the early hours of December 16, 2023.

The Indian Navy’s mission-deployed platforms showcased remarkable agility and promptness when faced with a distress call from the Malta-flagged vessel MV Ruen, signalling a hijacking incident in the Arabian Sea. With 18 crew members aboard, the vessel issued a Mayday message on the UKMTO portal on December 14, 2023, indicating unauthorized boarding by approximately six unknown individuals.

Responding to the urgent situation, the Indian Navy swiftly diverted its Naval Maritime Patrol aircraft, actively engaged in surveillance within the region, along with a warship dedicated to Anti-Piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden. Their primary objective: locate and provide assistance to MV Ruen amid the perilous circumstances.

The Naval Maritime Patrol aircraft successfully located the hijacked vessel during the early hours of December 15, 2023. Continuously monitoring the vessel’s movements, the Indian Navy aircraft maintained a vigilant eye on MV Ruen as it changed course, now heading towards the coast of Somalia.

Simultaneously, the Indian Navy’s warship, positioned strategically in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy measures, intercepted MV Ruen in the early hours of December 16, 2023.

Amidst this ongoing operation, a close watch is being kept on the evolving situation, with seamless coordination maintained among various agencies and Maritime Task Forces present in the area.
