New Delhi: In a groundbreaking achievement, Indian scientists have unveiled a unique disaster hospital that can become fully operational in just 8 minutes, offering immediate medical care to patients in need. Named ‘Aarogya Maitri,’ this hospital boasts not only an operating theater but also a mini intensive care unit (ICU) for the treatment of critically injured patients.
Cutting-Edge Facilities
In the event of a medical emergency, the hospital will be equipped with ventilators for patients requiring respiratory support. Additionally, essential medical equipment, including diagnostic tools and X-ray machines, will be readily available for thorough examinations. Despite its compact size, this miniature hospital will provide comprehensive medical care to patients.
A Lifesaver for Remote Areas
The ‘Aarogya Maitri’ hospital aims to cater to remote and underserved areas where resources are scarce or reaching medical assistance is challenging. Its portable design allows for easy transportation to these regions.
In-Built Amenities
Besides medical facilities, the disaster hospital will feature a station for preparing food, ensuring that patients and medical staff have access to sustenance. The hospital will be self-sufficient, equipped with water, a power generator, and other essential supplies. Notably, it can also be transported via aircraft, making it a versatile solution for disaster relief efforts.
The ‘Aarogya Maitri’ Cube
This unique hospital design consists of three frames, each containing 12 mini cubes. In total, there are 36 cubes, each measuring 72 cubic feet. These cubes house all the necessary equipment and supplies required to provide medical care effectively. The entire hospital fits compactly into these cubes, ensuring efficient and organized disaster response.

Cost and future plans
The development of this rapid-response disaster hospital is estimated to cost nearly 1.5 crores INR (approximately 200,000 USD). In the future, the Indian government plans to provide this innovative hospital to three countries as a humanitarian gesture. An official announcement regarding this initiative is expected from the central government soon.
In times of crises and disasters, ‘Aarogya Maitri’ promises to be a beacon of hope, delivering swift medical aid to those in need, irrespective of their location. Its ability to be quickly deployed to remote and disaster-stricken regions makes it a game-changer in disaster relief efforts.
