The Ministry of Railways recently shared a major update in the Parliament, stating that over 8,000 railway bridges have been repaired, strengthened, and rebuilt between 2022 and October 2025. In a written reply to a member’s question in the Rajya Sabha on December 5, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaisnaw highlighted the progress of ongoing works across the Indian Railways network aimed at upgrading infrastructure.
Vaishnaw said that Indian Railways relies on the digital Bridge Management System (BMS). The system records track design, maintenance, construction, and inspection details of all the bridges in the country. “Based on the monitoring on the portal, maintenance/rehabilitation works are carried out. During 2022-2025 (up to Oct’2025), 8,039 nos of railway bridges have been repaired/rehabilitated/strengthened/rebuilt in Indian Railways,” the Union Railway Minister said.
The minister further stated that the railway bridges undergo two compulsory inspections every year. A pre-monsoon review and a detailed post-monsoon evaluation later. “Railway bridges are assigned numerical ratings based on their physical condition assessed during these inspections,” Vaishnaw added.
Inspections are conducted more frequently on bridges with a lower rating, which are assessed as vulnerable. They also undergo special technical audits wherever required. According to reports, the subways and roads built under bridges are also inspected before and after the monsoon.
To reduce waterlogging, measures such as improved drainage systems, installing high-capacity pumps, sealing joints, and providing humps & cross-drains on RUBs and subways have been adopted.
