Speaking after the exchange of MoUs and Agreements between Maldives & India, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu said India and Maldives agreed on a comprehensive vision document which includes economic and maritime security partnership. “We (India-Maldives) agreed on a comprehensive vision document, charting the course of our bilateral relationship. A vision for comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership which encompasses development cooperation, trade and economic partnerships, digital and financial initiatives, energy projects, health cooperation as well as maritime and security cooperation,” said President Muizzu.

President Muizzu asserted India’s role in development of Maldives. He stated that India stood with Maldives at times of its need. He called India a key partner in Maldives’ socio-economic development.

President Muizzu said, “India is a key partner in the socio-economic and infrastructure development of Maldives and has stood by Maldives during our times of need. I would like to thank PM Modi, the government and people of India for the generous assistance and cooperation extended to Maldives over the years.”

He thanked the Indian Government for its decision to provide financial aid to Maldives. He added, “I am thankful for the Indian Government’s decision to provide support in the form of 30 billion Indian Rupees in addition to 400 million US Dollars bilateral currency swap agreement which will be instrumental in addressing the foreign exchange issues we are facing right now.”

He also talked about trade relations and said, “We look forward to concluding the Free Trade Agreement with India which will enable us to harness the full economic potential between our countries and to increase Indian investments in both our tourism and various sectors of development.”

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, in Delhi on Monday. President Mohamed Muizzu inspected the Guard of Honour at the ceremony and 21-gun salute was conferred on him.

Both the guests paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat by laying the wreath. Maldives President Muizzu signed the visitor’s book at Rajghat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu held a bilateral talk at Hyderabad House.

President Muizzu is on a five day visit to India, from 6 -10 October, 2024. This is the first bilateral visit of President Muizzu to India. He had earlier visited India on June 2024 to attend swearing-in-ceremony of Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers.

During his visit, President Muizzu is expected to hold discussions on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.
