Underlining India’s growing capabilities in the space sector, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology informed that the scientific experiments carried out by Indian astronaut Shukla on the International Space Station (ISS) were completely developed and prepared in India. This achievement is being considered an important step towards self-reliant India. He also mentioned about the moon mission in the Lok Sabha.
Dr. Jitendra Singh mentioned that, “An Indian astronaut will set foot on the Moon by 2040.” During his address in Parliament, Dr. Singh said that the scope of these experiments extends to important areas like life sciences, agriculture, biotechnology and cognitive science. He also clarified that the results of these research will not be limited to space science only, but will also benefit health services, agricultural reforms, disaster management and urban planning on Earth.
Under this visionary plan, India has now established key collaborations with the world’s leading space agencies such as NASA, Axiom Space and SpaceX. In the coming years, the country is set to undertake several landmark space missions, including:
- 2026: Launch of a humanoid robot mission called Vyommitra
- 2027: Flight of the first Indian astronaut under the Gaganyaan programme
- 2035: India’s own space station will be established
- 2040: An Indian astronaut will step on the lunar surface
Dr Singh hoped that “before 2047, a young Indian will announce the arrival of a developed India from the Moon.”
With a combination of indigenous technology and global collaboration, India is not only making its mark in space science but is also establishing itself as a leading space power globally.
