As tensions simmer along India’s borders, a quiet but unflinching force watches from above. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), often celebrated for its scientific triumphs, is now playing a key role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.
ISRO Chief Speaks On Satellite Vigilance
ISRO Chief V Narayan addressed the significance of space surveillance at the 5th convocation of Central Agricultural University in Agartala, revealing that 10 satellites are currently operating around the clock to monitor India’s borders, coastlines, and sensitive zones
“You all know about our neighbours. If we have to ensure the safety of our country, we have to serve through our satellites. We have to monitor our 7,000 km seashore areas. We have to monitor the entire Northern part continuously. Without satellite and drone technology, we can’t achieve that,” V Narayanan said
These high-functional satellites – including those from the CARTOSAT, RISAT, EMISAT, and MICROSAT series- work in unison, providing real-time data to India’s defence and intelligence agencies.
India’s Expanding Satellite Network
India currently has 127 operational satellites, including those from private operators and academic institutions. 29 of these orbit in geosynchronous paths, providing continuous coverage, while others operate in low-earth orbits, offering sharp, targeted insights.
ISRO’s latest announcement is pivotal as the organisation prepares to launch its upcoming surveillance satellite, EOS-09 (RISAT-1B). Scheduled for lift-off on May 18, the radar imaging satellite will enter a sun-synchronous orbit, significantly enhancing India’s surveillance strength along its strategically sensitive borders.
Satellite For Security And Social Development
Highlighting the broader role of space technology, Narayanan emphasized that satellite innovations are not just critical for national defence, but also essential for empowering the common citizen’s development. He expressed that before India completes a century of independence, it will rise as a global leader across multiple domains, contributing meaningfully to the world with its technological powers and visionary advancements.
With space technology becoming a strategic asset, ISRO is no longer just exploring the universe they are defending the nation by being India’s guardian in orbit.
