India Joins Elite League With First Successful Laser Weapon Test, Shoots Down Drone Using Directed Energy System

India has achieved a significant milestone in defense technology by successfully testing its Mk-II(A) Laser-Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system at the National Open Air Range (NOAR) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh.

Indian troops conducted their first test launch of a futuristic weapon, using high-powered laser-based directed energy to shoot down an unmanned aircraft. The DRDO developed a system that tracked down the drone and then utilised laser beam fire to destroy the target.

A successful field demonstration of the Land version of the Vehicle Mounted Laser Directed Weapon (DEW) MK-II(A) was held today in Kurnool under the supervision of CHESS DRDO. This weapon defeated the surveillance and swarm drones, causing sensor failure and lasting structural damage.

According to the DRDO an effective trial has positioned the country among an elite group of world powers who now possess high-power Laser DEW technology.

The successful test positioned India alongside only a few other nations that operate high-power Laser-DEW. The United States together with Russia and China represent the nations which currently possess this capability. The Chairman of DRDO Samir V Kamat informed ANI that Israel was among the top few nations which demonstrated such a system alongside the United States, Russia, and China.

The local Mk-II(A) DEW system demonstrated its full operational capacity through-function tests that included successful long-range interception of unmanned aircraft drones and multi-drone defense capabilities and enemy force detectors destruction. This counter drone system achieved the status of being the most potent counter drone system due to its rapid engagement speed and its precise aerial delivery of lethal destruction to targets in mere seconds.

Hyderabad-based CHESS of DRDO along with LRDE, IRDE, DLRL and academic institutions and Indian industries collaborated to develop this system. Laser-DEW detects targets through its built-in electro optic (EO) system or via radar systems to launch light-speed engagements for powerful laser beam cutting which brings about target destruction or highly significant damage when hitting warheads.
