Building on the success of the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), or Mangalyaan, which reached Mars in 2014, Isro plans to take its space exploration to the next level.
India is preparing a new mission to land a spacecraft on Mars, potentially making it the fourth country to accomplish this.
The Mars Lander Mission (MLM), also called Mangalyaan-2, has been approved by the Space Commission and is now waiting for final approval from the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Building on the success of the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), or Mangalyaan, which reached Mars in 2014, Isro wants to take its exploration efforts even further.
MOM showed that India could carry out interplanetary missions at a low cost. It made Isro the first Asian country to reach Mars’ orbit and the first in the world to do so on its first try.
Isro has shared its big plans, saying that while the Mars Lander Mission is still in the idea stage, it’s an important goal for the agency.
The mission aims to explore Mars more deeply by sending a lander and rover to the surface of the planet.
The Mars Lander Mission is part of a bigger plan to grow India’s space efforts. This includes building an Indian Space Station by 2035 and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040. Isro is also working on more Chandrayaan missions and developing a new launch vehicle to help achieve these goals.
Besides Mars, Isro has other space missions planned, including a Venus Orbiter Mission and a project with Canada for studying ultraviolet light in space.
If these missions succeed, India will strengthen its position as a top space country and help us learn more about our solar system.
