The Indian government has confirmed that they have detected a case of mpox infection, popularly known as monkeypox, in the country. According to officials, this infection is not linked to the recently declared global public health emergency by the WHO. This infection has been found in a traveler from a country where transmission of mpox infection continues.

Infection Related to Travel, and to West African Clade

It also stated that laboratory tests confirmed infection with a clade 2 virus variant belonging to the West African strain of the mpox virus, according to the Union Health Ministry. It also belongs to a different clade from the currently globally circulating clade 1 variant, which has been declared a global health emergency. The latest case is no different from the previous 30 such cases detected in India since July 2022.
