India Canada Row LIVE updates: Amid growing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, New Delhi on Monday ordered the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats as it announced its decision to withdraw Sanjay Kumar Verma, its High Commissioner, and other “targeted” diplomats in Canada. Ottawa had identified them as “persons of interest” in its probe into the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Reacting sharply, the Ministry of External Affairs called the Canadian allegations as “preposterous imputations” and argued that the matter was connected to the political challenges faced by the Trudeau government in Canada on the domestic front.
Earlier on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs announced that six Canadian diplomats — First Secretaries Marie Catherine Joly, Ian Ross David Trites, Adam James Chuipka, Paula Orjuela, Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert — had been expelled. “They have been asked to leave India by or before 11:59 PM on Saturday, October 19, 2024,” the MEA said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused the Indian government of supporting criminal activities in Canada and making a “fundamental error”.
“The government of India made a fundamental error in thinking that they could engage in supporting criminal activity against Canadians here on Canadian soil, whether it be murders or extortion or other violent acts,” said Trudeau.
