Following a mega meeting held by the NDA to elect its Parliamentary Party leader, various parties within the INDIA bloc, such as the Congress, DMK, and Trinamool Congress, are anticipated to convene separate meetings. These meetings will focus on analyzing their respective party’s performances in the Lok Sabha polls and deliberating on the future course of action.
The Congress is set to convene meetings of its Working Committee, which serves as the party’s top decision-making body, and will appoint its Parliamentary Party leader. Sonia Gandhi currently holds the position of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson and is expected to be re-nominated for the post.
INDIA Bloc Will Hold A Meeting For Newly Elected MP’s
As reported by India Today TV during the meetings, the newly-elected Congress MPs are likely to advocate strongly for Rahul Gandhi to assume the role of Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha. According to the party constitution, the authority to appoint the Leader of Congress rests with the party’s Parliamentary Party, which includes all newly-elected MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Sources indicated that if Sonia Gandhi chooses to do so, she has the option to make the decision promptly or defer it for a later time. They added that the likelihood of the decision being made during the meetings themselves is low.
For the first time since its removal from power in 2014, the Congress will have the opportunity to hold the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In the past 10 years, the party was unable to secure this position as its tally fell short of the required 10 percent of total seats in the House, both in 2014 and 2019.
The Congress Working Committee will convene an extended meeting at Hotel Ashok at 11 am, during which Congress Legislature Party leaders and presidents from various states will analyze the party’s performance and propose measures to enhance the organization.
