Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday delivered his longest Independence Day speech yet from the ramparts of the Red Fort, speaking for a record 103 minutes. It is also the longest address by any Prime Minister in the country’s history.
His speech began at 7:33 am and ended at 9:16 am, surpassing his previous record of 98 minutes set in 2024.
With this, PM Modi also overtook Indira Gandhi’s record by delivering his 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort, second only to Jawaharlal Nehru’s streak of 17.
PM Modi first broke the record in 2015 with an 88-minute (1 hour 28 minutes) address, surpassing former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s 72-minute (1 hour 12 minutes) speech in 1947.
In 2014, during his first Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi spoke for 65 minutes (1 hour 5 minutes), followed by a 96-minute speech in 2016.
PM Modi’s shortest Independence Day address came in 2017 at around 56 minutes. He spoke for 83 minutes (1 hour 23 minutes) in 2018, 92 minutes (1 hour 32 minutes) in 2019, and 90 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes) in 2020.
His Independence Day address lasted 88 minutes (1 hour 28 minutes) in 2021, 74 minutes (1 hour 14 minutes) in 2022, and 90 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes) in 2023.
