Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University in Gujarat has launched a new initiative to support transgender students by offering free higher education. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Ami Upadhyay, announced this inclusive program.
Since December 2019, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) has been assisting transgender students through its ‘ATRI’ Special Learner Support Centre. This center offers personalized assistance and resources to ensure transgender students have equal access to education and opportunities.
Alongside academic help, BAOU promotes the talents of transgender students through the ‘Tej Trisha’ talent search program, providing a platform for showcasing their skills in arts and performances.
Since 2021, BAOU has annually recognized an exceptional transgender student for their achievements and contributions to the university community. Building on this initiative, BAOU Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Ami Upadhyay has chosen to offer tuition-free education to transgender individuals.
The Vice Chancellor stated that the goal of this initiative is to eliminate financial obstacles for transgender students, allowing them to pursue their educational aspirations without concerns about tuition fees. All transgender individuals interested in higher education are encouraged to join and contribute to a more inclusive and promising future.
