New Delhi: The Income Tax Department on Friday informed more than 5 crore ITRs have been filed so far on income earned in the financial year 2022-23. Out of which 88 percent have also been verified electronically.
The IT department tweeted, ‘Out of 5.03 crore ITRs filed till 27th July, 2023, around 4.46 crore ITRs have been e-verified, ie more than 88% ITRs have been e-verified!’
As per the information, in comparision of last year, over 5 crore ITRs have been filed for AY 2023-24 till 27th July.
In an impotant news to those who have not filed the ITR yet, the deadline to file it for various categories is July 31. They should also know about government’s measure such as expansion of the scope of TDS/TCS, pre-filing of ITR, updated returns that have helped in connecting the taxpayers.
Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, ‘Taxpayers are sent e-mail and SMS reminders to file their ITRs and pay their due taxes.’ She informed that the IT department is running a few campaigns across the nation to spread awareness amony taxpayers to file tax returns.
Will the deadline ITR be expanded?
Earlier, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra had warned the taxpayers and asked them to file the ITR as soon as possible so that they do not have to face last-minute complications.
He had also said that the Finance Ministry had no intentions to extend deadline that is July 31.
In an interview to PTI, he said, “We expect the filing to be more than last year…we expect it should be more than last year.”
Taking the data of last year into consideration, around 5.83 crore income tax returns were filed till July 31. That was the last day to file returns for assessment year 2022-23.
