IMD Weather Update: Brace Up! Rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are ready to hit several states across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a trough extending from South Gangetic West Bengal to north Coastal Andhra Pradesh, coupled with an anti-cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, scattered light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, and lightning with strong winds traveling at 40 to 60 kmph is expected over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal on February 22 and 23.

Gusty Winds Coupled With Rain, Thunderstorms Likely In…
Additionally, gusty winds approaching at 30 to 40 kmph speed coupled with thunderstorms and lightning will affect Assam, Meghalaya, and Jharkhand today. According to IMD, light showers over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh are likely on the 23rd of Feb. An active easterly wave is expected to bring heavy rain over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on the 25th & 26th of February. Hailstorm activity is also likely to prevail in isolated places of Gangetic West Bengal on 23rd February.
Fresh Western Disturbance Over Northwest India
IMD has also warned against a fresh western disturbance brewing over Northwest India from the night of 24th February 2025. Under its influence, the following conditions are likely:
– Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall: Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh-Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on 25th & 26th February.
– Heavy rainfall/snowfall: Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad (25th-28th), Himachal Pradesh (26th-28th), Uttarakhand (27th & 28th February)
– Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh (26th- 28th), West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan (27th & 28th), East Uttar Pradesh (28th February)
Dense Fog
According to IMD’s latest update and data, dense fog conditions will prevail during night/early morning hours in isolated pockets of Sikkim till the 24th of February. Visibility between 50-199 m was reported in isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal and Meghalaya.
